Kenny & Mary Lou: A Family Bond

One of the people we support

For many families caring for a child or adult with developmental disabilities, St Louis Arc’s ARCH (Assistance with Residential Care in the Home) program is a life-line that helps them meet their family member’s needs in their home. Each day, Mary Lou cares for her son Kenny, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and epilepsy as a young child. The family first began using respite care through the St. Louis Arc when Kenny was just a boy “to give us a break once in a while,” she recalls. But after her husband’s death, Mary Lou found she needed more assistance, and ARCH was there to help.

Mary Lou and Kenny have relied on the same respite provider for nearly ten years. “He’s almost like another son to me,” says Mary Lou. Having family-driven support allows Mary Lou to take time for herself every week. “I get my hair done and go out to lunch with my girlfriend-that’s my time,” she explains. “I give Kenny a lot of loving and he appreciates affection,” says Hoog. “We all love Kenny and want what’s best for him-to keep him here at home.”
