May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month

Each year, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition encourages all Americans to #MoveInMay. Why? It’s National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! What a perfect time to focus on being more active, and becoming a healthier you!

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month was designated to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining one’s health.  Regular physical activity is good for everyone’s health.  People of all ages, body types, and abilities should be physically active.  Activities can include walking, aqua therapy, dancing, yoga or even horseback riding!

In honor of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, the St. Louis Arc is challenging all children and adults to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life?

Physical activity is shown to reduce people’s risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer. Eighty percent of American adults do not meet the government’s national physical activity recommendations for aerobic and muscle strengthening. And approximately 45 percent of adults are not sufficiently active to achieve health benefits.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

  • Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week;
  • Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves;
  • Participate in muscle-strengthening activities at least 2 days a week.

Physical activity is for everyone. No matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you. Together, we can rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May!
