Man holding a sign

On March 1, 2017 the nation observed Spread the Word to End the Word, a day dedicated for society to stop and think about the use of the R-word. At the St. Louis Arc, the Social Justice Committee honored the day by asking the question “Which words would you like people to use to describe you?” A wide-array of words were shared, all of which were positive and empowering to the individual.

What words describe you

Flash the Word

For the past six years, the Social Justice Committee has spent the spring months spreading the word in an interactive way — through flash mob. A flash mob is when a group of people gather in a public place to perform in a synchronized manner, often to music. Over the years the Social Justice Committee has worked with various community partners, performing the flash mob throughout St. Louis spreading the message of respect.

This year over 200 participants, staff members, and community partners will gather for five different flash mob performances throughout St. Louis. Students, professionals, and community members join in the fun when the Social Justice Committee arrives. This year the group is dancing to “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift.

Community Partnerships

A special thank you to New City School, University of Missouri St. Louis, St. Louis University, and Westport Plaza for helping us spread the message of respect. The first performance of the season was wonderfully captured via drone. Check out our group kicking off the Spread the Word flash mob at New City School below.

I love that image with the words and think it would make a great shirt!
