Each July we celebrate Park and Recreation Month, recognizing the importance of parks and recreation in the lives of individuals. At the St. Louis Arc the Leisure Services team works throughout the year to help people develop an appreciation of recreation and parks while engaging with their community.

Leisure Summer Programs

The Arc’s summer programs, Teens in Motion and Neighborhood Experiences, give teens and young adults opportunities to learn about employment options, while also enjoying some fun in their city. From visiting the St. Louis Zoo to volunteering at Lone Elk Park, these programs are taking advantage of the many park opportunities in the greater St. Louis area.

Earlier this month, 50 teens and young adults in the Arc’s summer programs enjoyed one of our local parks with a Field Day! The day, entitled “Lou-A-Palooza”, had a St. Louis theme was chock full of games. Participants tie-dyed shirts, battled each other in a cup stacking challenge, and played kickball and yard games.

Volunteering

This year an ambitious young teen, EJ Sorg, volunteered his videography and editing talents to help the Arc celebrate Park and Recreation Month. EJ enjoyed Lou-A-Palooza from behind the lens of his camera, shooting footage of his friends playing in the park. He then spent the afternoon editing a short film to showcase the day’s activities. EJ is currently in his second year of Neighborhood Experiences and will be a junior at Lindbergh High School this fall.

Thank you EJ for helping us celebrate Park and Recreation Month!
